The short track in Heidenreichstein produced some of the best flat track racing in Europe!
Happy to be back racing were long time cup veterans Mathias Hahn & Tom van Nes. Still a bit rusty from lack of practice, they were all smiles of finally racing again! New visitors from the British short track cup were Anthony Brown on his beautiful self build Rotax and Steven ‘von’ Hillary on his monstrous Red Max Harley-Davidson XR750!
German newcomer Stefan Gatzenmeier was strong in practice but had to pull out with some teething problems on his freshly prepared motorcycle. We hope he will have sorted this out by next round. To the delight of hundreds of local fans the natural soil dirt track produced tons of grip and the tight corners made for some very close racing! Every qualifying heat was won by a different rider and the cards were well mixed for the all deciding 12 lap final!
At the start of the final, Steven Hall took the holeshot followed by Boast, Jansen, Scheper, Pocklington & Belli. The field stayed very close throughout, but on lap 6 disaster struck. Belli aimed for the inside line coming out of turn 4 and hit Pocklington. Both bikes were catapulted into the air. Pocklington got back up with a sore shoulder but the champion stayed down with a broken collarbone and several cracked ribs. Hopefully the current cup leader has a speedy recovery and can continue to defend his title.
The race was restarted in a traditional wheel-to-wheel line up for the remaining 6 laps. Steven Hall rode to his first cup victory, followed closely by Peter Boast.
Sensation of the day was Dutchman Halbe Scheper, bringing home his first cup podium finish. Spending a week in California taking riding lessons from flat track legend Jimmy Wood paid off and he took third from Jansen on the last lap!
